Substantive Post #2 (Challenge B)

The Design Process

The design process involves moving through the key phases of understand, plan, try, and reflect to creatively and effectively solve problems. Each stage calls for a different kind of thinking, and throughout the process, people shift between divergent thinking, which explores ideation and imagination, and convergent thinking, which highlights more of the execution phases. These phases iterative, meaning they are non-linear. Meaning that the cycle can be reflected on and refined at any point of the design process.

Challenge A

In Challenge A: Comics, my experience really highlighted this iterative concept. When I first started creating my comic about long-term memory, I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do and how it each stage would progress. But as I experimented with different tools and layouts, and after receiving feedback from peers, I realized my original plan needed revising. I found myself returning to my planning and testing stages several times before feeling satisfied with the final version. This experience reminded of iteration as reflection and revision were very important in developing my project.

Challenge B

For Challenge B: Videos, I’m approaching the project using a Backward Design framework. This means I began by clearly defining the learning objective for my video before moving into the creative stages. Starting with the end goal in mind has helped guide my planning and design choices. In contrast, during the Comics Challenge, I engaged with the planning phase more passively and only later realized how essential it is to fully engage with it before creating. I am now placing greater emphasis on the understanding and planning phases to make sure that every element directly supports the intended learning outcome.
